Constant Use Of +13.8 (+12vdc) - Technical Note  This Technical Note is to help understand some serious errors young installers might be doing with Audio devices..... .... ... .. .

Constant Use Of +13.8 (+12vdc) - Technical Note

Many of the problems that young installers have with installable items; i.e., sounds, echo-boards and

like devices are created by the constant use of  +13.8 (+12vdc) for DC power input.

Many of today's "installables"  are designed with DC inputs of  +9 volts or similar voltages, thus when they are powered by the available +12vdc at the power cord or internal power supply, they are over-voltaged and most "over-operate".

The trick to obtaining proper operation is to use the voltage recommended by the manufacturer and when in doubt, look up the voltage rating of most of the electrolytic capacitors and operate the device at approximately 75-90 percent of their rated voltage. The Galaxy-Connex type echo-board is a classic example of this lower than normal operating voltage.

This also holds true with the sound-effects that come in the small plastic boxes. Almost all operate off of a +4.5 to +5.5vdc voltage. The device usually has a small IC voltage regulator built onto the PCB. LM78L05 is the most common among these.  The heavier 1.0 amp version of this common voltage regulator is LM7805

These devices have the small IC voltage regulator loaded to the gills reducing the +12vdc input down to the +5 volts needed by the device and aid in current limitation, so input voltages within the host radio of about +6vdc should be sought for the power input.

When these voltage regulators are loaded down, they get hot, become unstable, and are sometimes even destroyed by the heat. Attention of setting input voltage at operating voltages should always be paid.
