The Oscilloscope Probe made by Electronic Energy Source is an

inexpensive addition to a scope. You’d be surprised as to what

you can do with your scope having the right probes.


The requirements of your scope; it must be able to run in X-Y

mode.  It will not matter as to the number of channels it can display

at a time.  Just an independent Horizontal and Vertical input in

X-Y mode/function. Timing does not matter in X-Y mode with this device.

The Probe has BNC connectors for the input X & Y for your scope. Most multi-channel scopes are marked Chan 1 as "X" and Chan 2 as "Y"

It has a 1/8th inch standard mono plug on the wall power transformer to power the probe's circuitry. 

The Red and Black long leads allow you to reach parts testing at about 3-feet from the probe.

Once you play around with this probe, you will learn quickly which components you can test while they are still in a circuit.   This is exceptionally good for testing RF transistor while still screwed down to the heat-sink by only lifting two of the four contacts upward from making contact with the circuit.

I have never tried to write an instruction manual for this device, as each person, will learn their needs in time and their own ways to use it..  The key to being good with this thingy is you have to observe and pay attention to the patterns. Pay very close attention to pattern details. 

Some simple patters this probe makes on the scope's screen can be seen in the Scope Probe Screens drawing which is displayed in the accompanying photos.

A new part, tested from a certain pin to a certain pin with a certain polarity will show a defined pattern.  If you look at an unknown good or suspected bad part, testing it exactly as you did with the known good new part, should you find ANY differences in what pattern you should be seeing, then there is something wrong with that part.! ! 

What’s wrong?? Who cares… we throw that part away.

As time permits, I will increase data in reference to the device’s use and some how to’s… If you buy one of these probes, check for updates on its operation often by returning to the enlisted page for the probe.

I was introduced to this type probe in 1967 while I was going to an electronics school at Fort Monmouth, NJ

(Fixed Station Electronic Equipment Repair).

I later found that Popular Electronics ran it in their “Think Tank Projects”

It was a one hour block on introduction to the oscilloscope.  When they showed it to the class it was described in it’s simplicity and stated how helpful it is in locating flaws in just about anything that uses electricity if you know what the GOOD part is supposed to look like; [point to point].

Since that time, I have almost always had one of these probes available to my work bench o’scope.  When I retired from the Army in 1984; I set up a small CB shop in Steele, AL to be my retired life after the military service.  While there, I started using the probe many times per day and the values saved in just labor time alone were outstanding.

I will now start instructions of one of it simplest uses;

Testing A “Final” in a CB radio without removing it from the radio in done by unsoldering each of the outside pins from the main board and leave the center pin connected.  This frees the transistor so you have direct undisturbed measuring access.


Place one of you leads on each of the unsoldered pins… you should have a change from a straight line on your screen to a shape as listed as Good Transistor Base To Collector Bias
